I came by James Ross' They Don't Dance Much when it was recommended to me by Joe R. Lansdale. Daniel Woodrell had suggested it to him. Even Raymond Chandler was a fan. Last year, Mysterious Press came out with a reprint of the novel (including a forward by Woodrell). The book shows that rural noir could be just as mean, nasty, and engaging. They Don’t Dance Much by James Ross was recommended reading in the back of another pulp mystery book I read. Of course I had to get it. It’s a brooding mystery in the vein of the Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain. It’s sparsely written, a lean first-person narrative by about getting rich quick and murder. Taking place in the south and originally published in , it is filled with what we would call ‘not politically correct’ language and actions of Blacks, so if you’re. "They Don't Dance Much" is a highly readable and highly enjoyable book that takes you to another time and another place--a place you hope to God you never experience.
